Telles pours in 21 to spark Squires

Alison Telles scored 16 of her 21 points to highlight East Union’s 50-28 sophomore girls basketball victory at rival Sierra Monday.

East Union converted seven 3-pointers, while Sierra struggled from the free-throw line where it hit just 10 of 29 attempts.

Klasey Kachalkin pitched in 12 points for the Squires (8-3 Valley Oak League, 13-8 overall), and Kristen Piasecki turned in 10 points and seven steals.

Alison Armstrong recorded 10 points for the host Timberwolves, and Onyx Malone grabbed six rebounds.

Alyssa Gonigan produced 20 points to help East Union improve to 9-2 in league, and 19-3 overall.

Angelique Cardoza, Laurel Hoppis and Kayla Lamont chimed in with six points apiece.

Sierra was paced by Asia Cortez’s 21 points and five rebounds. She fired in all 13 of Sierra’s points in the fourth quarter.

Valerie Nester scored 11 points to go with eight rebounds, and Brenda Padilla led Sierra in rebounding with 12.

TURLOCK — After stunning Oakdale 42-35 last week to earn a share of the VOL junior varsity championship, Lathrop High continued to show signs of promise at the 5th Annual Rumble in the Jungle tournament hosted by Pitman High Saturday.

Jeremy Asican was one of 11 medalists for the Spartans, as he came home with gold. Aziez Hassan and Oscar Munoz both took second, and B.J. Bautista ended up in third.

Arck Ramirez, Jay Butler and Erik Valencia rounded out Lathrop’s top performers with fourth-place finishes.
