ROSEVILLE — Mission accomplished for Sierra’s Kaitlyn Rausa, who had longed for a Day 2 qualification in the Sac-Joaquin Section Division II Individual Tournament.
The Valley Oak League singles champion finally reached the semifinal round in her fourth and last appearance at Johnson Ranch Racquet Club, decisively winning both matches on Thursday. Also coming back today are Manteca teammates Sahiba Kaur and Katie Kim in doubles competition. It’s the second year in a row that Kaur has reached this point in the tournament.
Rausa, seeded fourth, opened with a 6-0, 6-0 shutout of Oakmont’s Jordan Cheng. She then blew out Amanda Kidd of Vista del Lago, 6-1, 6-1. Up next is top-seeded Jasjot Sandhu of Mira Loma today. In the other semifinal, Vanden’s Katie McDaniel takes on Ponderosa’s Kaira Bernaldez.
No. 3 McDaniel claimed the Division II doubles title last year. She took on Manteca’s Ellie Kim in the first round Thursday, defeating the VOL runner-up 6-1, 6-4.
Katie Kim and Kaur could have a rematch today with VOL rivals Annie Dunn and Katherine Juarez of Central Catholic, who lost to the Buffaloes tandem in the league final.
The Kim-Kaur combo is seeded No. 2 and began its run with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Mountain House’s Saanvi Chilakapati and Malvika Seth. They then got past Placer’s Cassandra Rhoades and Macy Maddox, 6-2, 6-3. They’ll square off with unseeded Maya Holman and Maya Gentry of Vacaville today. The two Mayas upset third-seeded Fiona Babcock and Ai-linh Tran of Christian Brothers 6-4, 6-4 in the opener.
The Central Catholic pair also took out a seeded team on its way to the semifinals, knocking off No. 4 Michelle Schwarzenberg and Nora Tanovic of Placer, 7-5, 7-0. Dunn and Juarez will meet Armijo’s top-seeded duo of Faustina and Flora Wan, who took second last year.
