OAKDALE — Sierra rode the strength of its singles players to pick up a needed 5-4 Valley Oak League win over Oakdale on Thursday.
Nadia Petrovic was key from the No. 2 spot, as she fended off Kendra Branch, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4.
Reigning VOL Singles Tournament champion Kaitlyn Rausa blanked Tayla Barry, 6-0, 6-0. No. 4 Joyce Sebastian also recorded a 6-0, 6-0 win. No. 3 Melanie Nguyen defeated Lijian Bucad, 6-2, 6-4. Jasmine Sebastian rounded out Sierra wins with a 6-0, 6-3 sweep of Shannon Yang.
Oakdale ruled the doubles matches but was challenged in the No. 1 contest. Sierra’s Seerit Gill and Varshaa Bala dropped a 4-6, 6-3, 5-10 decision to Paige Morgan and Alyssa Jingo.
The Timberwolves improved to 2-2 in the VOL.
Kimball 9, East Union 0
TRACY — The Lancers had a rough showing in this one-sided VOL battle.
Isabel Moreno threatened to extend the No. 1 singles match to a third set but came up short against Kimball’s Maxine Jaque, 2-6, 5-7.
The Jaguars had 6-0, 6-0 wins at Nos. 2, 3 and 6 singles and No. 1 and 3 doubles while losing just four games in the rest of the matches.
Manteca 9, Downey 0
The Buffaloes (7-0 overall) were able to get a match in Thursday on their league bye.
They put together a dominant effort despite sitting out several of their usual starters, including No. 1 Julia Tang and No. 3 Makenna Condit. Sahiba Kaur held down the top spot and won, 6-3, 2-6, 10-6. Kerren Zou (6-2, 6-1), Melissa Poncini (6-1, 6-2), Isabella Huerta (6-3, 6-0) and Danielle Diaz (6-0, 6-0) rolled to singles sweeps.
Kalissa Martin/Amorina Tse (6-2, 6-1), Jeanine Foo/Charlene Magdalay (6-4, 6-4) and Arlette Ponce/Raveen Nijar (6-0, 6-2) were doubles winners.
