Timberwolves open golf league with victory

Sierra High’s girls golf team teed off its Valley Oak League season with a 253-351 victory over Weston Ranch Monday at Manteca Park Golf Course.

Amanda Orr and Heather Schmitz anchored the Timberwolves from the middle group. Orr earned medalist honors with a 10-over-par 47, while Schmitz trailed the leader by a stroke.

All individual points went to Sierra, as Ashley Keisel, Alicia Kmiec and Allison Smith turned in a 51, 53 and 54, respectively.

Courtney Duran headed the Cougars with a 60. Emily Medeiros ended up with a 66, while Brittany Jasper carded a 69.

Sierra next heads to Sonora Thursday, while Weston Ranch hosts Manteca at Van Buskirk Golf Course.

Galt 3, Weston Ranch 0
In Galt, it took the visiting Cougars a while to get going in a 9-25, 12-25, 22-25 season-opening loss.

Gretchen Monares and DeArbia Gardner produced four and three kills, respectively, to spearhead Weston Ranch’s attack. Anais Castillo contributed two aces.

Weston Ranch’s sophomore team fell in two (12-25, 19-25), and the freshmen swept (25-12, 25-20).
