Ripon — Zaire Davis and Jordyn Wall had one goal in mind since their freshman year of bringing the Trans Valley League title back to the Ripon High girls’ soccer program.
They did just that on Tuesday during a concerted team effort, downing Modesto Christian at Stouffer Field, 3-0.
“The last title here was 2010,” Wall said as she and Davis anchored the defense that also consisted of Sara Souza and Sarah Alves.
“We just had to make sure we played our game (on defense),” added Davis.
The Indians (8-0-1 in league, 15-1-1 overall) played the Crusaders to draw earlier this year. They took a 1-0 lead in the 29th minute as Haley Simmons converted a cross from fellow midfielder Megan Johnson.
However, Modesto Christian (4-1-1 in TVL, 7-3-1 overall) had scoring threats in Carsyn Hoogendoorn and Juliet Hardy.
Ripon made sure that neither player would pose a threat, particularly in the second half as the defense consistently snuffed out any serious threats.
The Indians had an 18-5 shot-at-goals advantage over the Crusaders. Sophomore goalie Courtney Slamon had three saves.
“Credit her with another goalie shutout,” said Ripon coach Jamie DeBruyn, who landed Hailey Monroe for applying pressure on the Crusaders.
Davis and Wall, meanwhile, were confident that even a 1-0 lead would hold up. They made sure the ball stayed on the opposite end of the field.
“Our defense has been playing real well,” DeBruyn said. “As for our senior leadership, they’ve been strong all year long.”
The Indians finally got some breathing room in the second half as Cindy Alvarez, off a corner kick from Alves, scored on a header in the 69th minute.
Alves did one better, blasting a 25-yard goal from the perimeter in the 79th minute to make for some finishing touches.
