Sierra’s Scott Tolman and Ripon freshman phenom Ty Wells have set themselves up to earn berths to the first-ever CIF State Swimming Championships with their efforts in the Sac-Joaquin Section Boys Trials on Friday.

Tolman, one of five Timberwolves to compete at Tokay High of Lodi, clocked the second-fastest time in the 50 freestyle and is seeded fifth in the 100 breaststroke. Swimmers with the best three times in each event in today’s section finale advance to the state meet, along with additional competitors who match or eclipse at-large standards.

Wells qualified for the finals in the 100 butterfly and 100 breaststroke. He surpassed the at-large mark of 58.04 seconds in the breaststroke but will have to do it in the finals to move on.

Also from Ripon, Daniel Esenwein earned the top seed in the 100 backstroke and also advances in the 500 free. Lady Indians joining Esenwein and Wells today are Hannah Sweet, Mallory Brubaker, Elizabeth Wenner, Andria Martin, Chloe Winter and Kyra Foley.

Tolman won’t be the lone T’wolf. The boys 200 medley relay qualified for the final with the seventh best time, and the 400 free relay made the consolation final with the 10th seed.  Trevor Fast, John Buonaro, Zack Thomas all set personal records in their individual events. Fast and Buonauro finished in a 28th-place tie in the backstroke. Fast is a second alternate for the 100 fly final. Neil Sandberg competed at the frosh-soph level.

Sierra’s girls 400 free has made it through to the finals as an alternate and is seeded 16th.
