Four Manteca High field athletes have earned spots for the Sac-Joaquin Section Masters Meet.
East Union, Manteca and Sierra were represented in the SJS Division III Trials on Wednesday at Golden Valley of Merced. Half of the field finals took place Wednesday, and the will go on Friday along with the track finals.
The top seven finishers by place advance to Masters, which is set for May 23-24 at Folsom High.
Tyler Watkins has qualified in two field events, earning the triple jump title with a mark of 44 feet, 6 inches. He was also fourth in the high jump at 5-10.
Joshua Mellion set a personal record in winning the discus with a throw covering 178-03. Fellow MHS senior Levi Perez took seventh in the event, topping out at 137-07. Rylan Steckler placed seventh in the girls high jump with a leap of 4-08.
On the track, eight in most events qualified for the Division III final, while the top 12 advance in the 800-meter run.
Manteca senior sprinter Julian Moncada highlighted area track standouts, turning in the second fastest qualifying times in the 100 (10.66) and 200 (21.86). His 200 mark is a new personal record. East Union’s Jackson Fay also made the finals in both events, running a 10.68 in the 100 and 22.18 in the 200.
Moncada also led the Buffaloes’ 4x100 relay to the top seed for the finals. He was joined by Quinn Martinez, Joseph Habibi and Jayden Scarver, and finished in 42.37 seconds.
Manteca sophomore William Brown is in the finals for both hurdles events. He’s seeded sixth in the 110 hurdles at 15.31 seconds, and he set a PR in the 300 hurdles at 39.39, good for the third best time of the day. Brown is also on the No. 3 4x400 relay, which finished in 3 minutes, 29.87 seconds. The Buffaloes’ mile relay includes Mateo Esparza, Moncada and Scarver.
East Union’s 4x100 (Cesar Salinas, JP Abrew, Darrion Brown, Fay) is seeded third with a time of 43.02.
Sierra’s 4x800 turned in the fourth fastest time at 8:17.76. The quartet includes Manuel Alvarez, Landen Nabb, Rishabh Gopal and Kenneth Roach.
