tennis
Sierra’s Kevin Rausa returns a shot to Kimball freshman standout Logan Staggs.
The Valley Oak League schedule got underway Tuesday, and Sierra High did everything it needed to do to open the season with a win. Its match with Kimball High finished in a tie, resorting to a tie-breaker method that left Sierra coping with the loss at Uninon Road Tennis Courts.

Both teams had 7.5 points, making the total number of games won on the day the deciding factor and Kimball won that tally 66-53.

Sierra got solid play from their top-three singles players, but could only muster one win in four doubles matches. Sierra No. 1 Kevin Rausa was stopped in his opener against Kimball No. 1 Logan Staggs, but rebounded with 6-0, 6-1 wins. Forrest Tolman also earned a pair of victories, winning 6-4 and 6-1 against the Jaguars’ No.’s 2 and 3.

Sierra’s Greg Blockinger won two of his three matches, 7-6 (7-1) and 6-0.

Kimball standout freshman Logan Staggs dealt each of the Timberwolves’ singles player a loss, surrendering one point in the three matches. The doubles action was dominated by the Jaguars, with Josh Weiland and Joel Boling getting the Sierra’s only win in a 10-6 win over Baye Kuumba and Troy Mathew.

Sierra will be on the courts Thursday when they play host to the Lathrop Spartans at the Union Road Courts.

Manteca 15, Oakdale 0

Manteca (4-5, 1-0) had little difficulty disposing of Oakdale, blasting the Mustangs in a shutout in VOL action Tuesday.

Manteca’s No. 1 singles player Xavier Lopez handled his matches 6-2, 6-2 and 6-1, while teammate Alex Barragan went 6-3, 7-5, and 6-1. Brandon Sullivan won 6-3, 7-5, and 6-1 as well. The No. 1 doubles tandem of Max Angelo and Oral Nunis handled their two matches 10-2 and 10-3, and No. 2 Marcus Munoz and Sam Dhaliwal won 10-1 and 10-7.

Manteca will make the trip to Tracy to take on the Kimball Jaguars Thursday.

Weston Ranch 15, Lathrop 0

It was all Cougars in their easy win over the Spartans, getting a perfect afternoon from No. 3 singles player Serbinder Singh.

Singh was perfect in his three matches, taking all three by the score of 6-0 to lead Weston Ranch. Mike Tongpala won 6-4, 6-0 and 6-0, while Suhkman Singh won 6-2, 6-0 and 6-0. Jovincet Legaspi and Itsui Yamayoshi teamed up for a pair of 10-0 wins, and Ray Lagoc and Carl Legaspi turned in the same performance with a pair of shutout wins.

The Cougars will be traveling to Manteca to take on East Union Thursday, while Lathrop will meet up with the Sierra Timberwolves in Manteca.
