Matthew Uecker’s first-half goal was the difference.

At Thursday’s Trans Valley League match, the Ripon High boys soccer team escaped Escalon with a 1-0 victory.

Uecker, who is a sophomore, was helped out by teammate Andre DeDonatis, who was credited with the assist.

Defense played a key role for the Indians (4-4) in registering the shutout over Escalon (1-6-1), with goal-keeper Henk Gaalswyk coming away with three saves.

The Indians will face Hughson at 4 p.m. on Tuesday.

Southern League

LeGrand 3, Ripon Christian 1

The Knights faced one of the league’s top teams on Thursday.

LeGrand (6-3-1) is currently in third place – Gustine leads the pack with Delhi maintaining second place in the Southern League – thanks to a pair of first-half goals at Ripon Christian (1-8-1).

“The Bulldogs moved the ball around nicely, taking advantage of (our) defensive miscues,” said Knights coach Keith Terpsma.

LeGrand scored its first goal in the 18th minute, with the second occurring in the 21st minute.

“We didn’t have an answer for (the Bulldogs) until we switched the defense around to minimize their threat,” Terpsma said.

RC was down 2-0 at the intermission.

LeGrand increased its lead early in the second half, going up 3-0.

The Knights finally scored when Max Koetsier found the ball in the corner and delivered a cross to Danny Vander Molen, who capitalized on the opportunity by drill the ball into the back of the net. Christian Manes initiated the attack.

“We had a lot of guys who were willing to push forward in the end, but it happened too late,” said Terpsma.

RC will take on Waterford on Tuesday.
