RIPON — After getting shut out in its first three Southern League matches, Ripon Christian erupted for a 5-0 win over Mariposa on Thursday.

Ripon Christian improved to 1-3 in league play, 3-8 overall.

The visiting Grizzlies had chances early but were thwarted by goalie Lukas Vermeulen and defender Logan Van Vuren. Jake Van Vuren scored in the 20th and 27th minutes to give Ripon Christian a 2-0 halftime lead. His second goal was set up nicely by Jadon Vander Molen’ throw-in assist.

“Once our defense settled down, we were able to mark their forwards well and prevent further threats,” Ripon Christian coach Keith Terpsma said. “Van Vuren’s working to make things happen for us this season. When he’s not making precision passes, he’s apparently scoring goals.”

Vander Molen added a goal in the 54th minute, and two minutes later Rian Koetsier put one away off a cross from Nick Van Vliet. Van Vliet capped the final score moments later with a goal of his own.

“When the momentum is there you have to ride it,” Terpsma said, “and that’s exactly what we did today.”

Ripon Christian heads to Newman next Tuesday looking to upset first-place Orestimba.
