STOCKTON — Once Sierra got past the pinpoint serving of Weston Ranch’s Allyna Tayag, the visiting Timberwolves rebounded for a 21-25, 25-19, 25-17, 25-15 Valley Oak league volleyball win.
Tayag (five aces, two kills and five assists) had been out due to injury, and her return invigorated the Cougars (0-3 VOL, 3-10 overall), if just temporarily.
“That was her first game back from an injury,” Weston Ranch coach Nayeli Moreno said of Tayag. “Our team had been out of its element without her and she came back and gave us some fire.
“Our energy was just completely low the rest of the night. It was just an off night for everyone.”
In the third game, playing middle for the first time this season Ashlee-Lynn Matteroli came up big for Sierra (1-1, 4-2), firing a back-row kill to get to game point and then firing an ace for the 25-17 win.
“I didn’t let anything get to me,” Matteroli said. “I just did my part and played the game.”
Matteroli finished with 16 kills and four aces.
“Ashlee did phenomenal for us in the middle,” Timberwolves coach Eryn Bowers said. “She had not played there for us all season and came out with 16 kills.
“The first game out, we had some girls playing in different spots. We were able to get the girls back to their spots and things got better.”
Sierra’s Stella Brierly had her share of aces with nine along with nine kills. Brierly fired off four aces in a row late in the fourth set to give the Timberwolves a cushion on the way to a 25-15 win.
“I think we did real good tonight,” Brierly said. “We played really well together.
“We didn’t let a lot of balls drop. We made some adjustments because we have a girl out due to injury.”
Becca Thomson had 38 assists, five aces and three kills for the Timberwolves. Natalie Dias added 10 kills and an ace and Kylie Machado had six aces.
Julianna Lassiter had seven digs, six aces and five kills for the Cougars. Sierrah Cleary added eight assists, Ashanti Boatman chipped in four kills, four blocks and an ace and Janelle Ico had three kills and two digs.
