LATHROP — After missing the postseason in the Valley Oak League by one set in 2017, Lathrop finished its first season in the Western Athletic Conference on Tuesday with a 25-15, 25-19, 25-22 sweep of Mountain House and celebrated senior night with a second-place conference finish and a berth to the Sac-Joaquin Section playoffs.
“This is a major accomplishment for our program,” Spartans coach Heather Anderson said. “This is my fourth year in the program and we have been working toward it since I got here. It feels huge. It is making history for our school.
“We had senior night and the girls were excited, but we had to focus and play our game. I think we did that tonight.”
Avleen Kaur and Jordan Corner were two seniors who stepped up for the Spartans (12-2 WAC, 14-7 overall). Kaur finished with eight kills, a block and two aces and after the Jaguars (8-6, 12-12) had put six straight points on the board to come within 24-19 in the second set, Kaur ended the run with a resounding kill.
“We did OK in the first set and we needed something to push us through in the second set,” Kaur said. “And I knew I needed to go all in and get that one.
“I have been looking forward to this night for four years and I think we came out and showed everyone what Lathrop High is made of.”
Corner also had eight kills, a block and two aces.
“This feels amazing,” Corner said. “I think we made a mark on our school and I’m proud of the whole team. It was an all-around team effort.
Jahsita Fa’alii led Lathrop with 14 kills and four assists. Karina Chavez had 28 assists and 11 digs and Krystal Tempra scrambled for 18 digs.
