VOLLEYBALL: Spartans sweep past defending WAC champion

MODESTO —Jahsita Fa’ali’i served nine straight points in the third set to give Lathrop a 14-9 lead that held up for a 25-18, 25-13, 25-23 sweep of Western Athletic Conference champion Beyer on Thursday.
“Jahsita’s serving was amazing, it really got us back in it,” Lathrop coach Heather Anderson said. “That really swayed the momentum in that set.
Fa’ali’i nearly finished with at triple-double, tallying 15 kills, six aces and 15 digs. She’s the reigning Offensive Player of the Year in the WAC, where it’s an open race for the title with MVP Olivia Keller transferring from Beyer to Gregori. Lathrop (3-0 WAC, 4-2 overall) and Mountain House remain as the unbeaten teams in conference play.
“We were 2-0 and they (Beyer) were 2-0, so this was definitely a big match,” Anderson said.
Hailey Hunter stepped up with 24 digs and three aces. Jennifer Santillan set 19 assists and contributed six digs to the defense. Desiree Ambatali had six digs, and Rylie Asuncion three kills.
“Overall, we played really clean defense and that’s what won it for us,” Anderson said. “It was really team effort. The stats may not show it, but our blockers got a lot of touches that helped the defense.”

Ripon Christian 3, Denair 0 
RIPON — Ripon Christian (2-0, 6-3) coasted to a 25-5, 25-16, 25-8 win in the Southern Athletic League match.
Faith Ozenbaugh had a 19-point service run in the third set, adding six aces and two kills on the night. Emily Van Groningen posted 12 kills, and Ariel Vander Woude handed out 19 assists.
The program welcomed back members of the 1999 state championship team, who were honored between the first and second games.

Chavez 3, Weston Ranch 2
STOCKTON — The host Cougars (2-9) wound up on the losing end of a well-contested non-league match, 25-19, 27-25, 22-25, 20-25, 11-15.
Setter Sierrah Cleary had a busy night, distributing 30 assists. Libero Julianna Lassiter collected 13 kills, five aces and 11 digs. Ashanti Boatman added nine kills and four blocks.

Junior varsity
Lathrop 2, Beyer 1

MODESTO — Lathrop (3-0WAC , 5-1 overall) held on for the 25-18, 19-25, 15-9 victory.
Camila De La Garza spearheaded the attack with 14 assists. Lylliana Avila registered six kills and 13 digs, while Godwina Ogbeide had three and 13.

Freshman
Lathrop 2, Beyer 0

MODESTO — The Spartans’ perfect record was not tested in the 25-9, 25-12 win. They are now 3-0 in league, 6-0 overall.
Mya Cabreros collected four assists and three assists, Dana Mandanas picked up five digs and Irais Martinez served five aces.
