Cassie Waggy is no stranger to immediate success.

As a freshman at East Union High, she helped the Lancer softball team earn the Valley Oak League championship as one of the league’s most feared hitters.

Now a true freshman at Lehigh University of Pennsylvania, Waggy is at it again.

She was one of two freshmen voted onto the All-Patriot League first team as a designated player after contributing to the Mountain Hawks’ run to the conference title. Waggy was also twice named Patriot League Rookie of the Week.

In the regular season, she hit .348 with 23 RBIs and held a .430 on-base percentage and .446 slugging percentage. Waggy was ranked among the top 10 in league in each category and was the only freshman to do so.

Lehigh entered the Patriot League Tournament with a 37-17 overall record following an 18-2 finish in conference play. The Mountain Hawks went undefeated and didn’t give up a run in the tournament, second-seeded Army 2-0 in the championship game. Waggy drove in one of those runs with a sacrifice fly.

Lehigh earned its seventh berth to the NCAA Division-I Regionals in nine years. Last Friday in Norman, Okla. they lost to No. 4-ranked Oklahoma 19-3 in five innings and were eliminated by Oregon State on Saturday, 9-2. Waggy went 0 for 4 in her first NCAA appearance but drove in one of the Mountain Hawks’ two runs with a groundout against Oregon State.
