Weston Ranch grounds Eagles with balanced attack

McNair’s stay across town as Weston Ranch was a short one, as the host Cougars cruised to a three-game victory (25-13, 25-16, 25-12) and their third in a row.

Elisabeth Alexander (7 kills, 3 aces) and Victoria Gulley (6 kills, 3 aces) were dangerous from the service line and at the net. Renee West crushed six kills of her own.

Alex Marapao quarterbacked the attack and finished with 21 assists. Clarissa Gonzales and Donna Marapao picked up three digs apiece.

“We improved on what we needed to work, so this was a positive step,” Weston Ranch coach Chris Bauer said.

The Cougars host Millennium of Tracy next Monday before opening Valley Oak League play Wednesday against visiting Kimball.

East Union 3, Franklin 0

Courtney Posz handed out 10 assists and served 18 points and four aces in the Lancers’ sweep (25-12, 25-18, 26-24). They improved to 10-2-2 on the season.

Monica King produced four kills and eight digs, while Regina Dias had three and 11, respectively. Carolina Gutierrez chipped in 12 service points and five aces.

Chavez 3, Manteca 0

The Buffaloes (2-1) dropped their first defeat in Stockton on Thursday, falling in three straight (15-25, 14-25, 22-25).

Alyssa Burch led the way with seven kills. Chelsea Gomez and Aryanna Martinez finished with seven digs apiece. Setter Beth Aschenbrenner recorded two aces to go with 15 assists.

Manteca takes on West in Tracy this Monday then opens the VOL season with East Union visiting Wednesday.


East Union 2, Franklin 0

East Union made quick work of Franklin (25-8, 25-20).

Melissa King hammered four kills while registering 16 service points and seven aces. Deja Guzman churned out seven aces and four kills. Edmi Lopez chipped in four kills.

Weston Ranch 2, McNair 1

The Cougars (4-0) needed a deciding third set to maintain their perfect start to the season. They dominated the opening set 25-9 before splitting the next two, 22-25, 15-7.

Sabrina Rangel spearheaded the offense with nine aces and six assists. She also picked up eight digs. Leading the front row were Elysia Hernandez (3 kills, 8 digs) and Janis Sanchez (3 kills, 2 blocks).


Weston Ranch 2, McNair 0

Weston Ranch prevailed in a competitive two-set showdown (25-20, 26-24).

Jasmine Canela (2 kills), Nichole Bigornia (2 assists) and Alyssa Ryan (3 aces) led the way for the 3-1 Cougars.
