MODESTO — Modesto Junior College hosted its annual Modesto Invitational Saturday and track athletes from Weston Ranch, Manteca and East Union were on hand to compete.

Cougars head coach Rick Cuevas used the event to give some of his lower level athletes a chance to taste a big time track event and many came through in impressive fashion.

But no Cougar impressed more than Angell Mayfield, who waltzed past the competition in the 110-meter high-hurdles with a time of 14.96 seconds.

The run was not wind-aided and qualified as the fifth fastest in California thus far this season.

“Everyone did all right,” Cuevas said. “We didn’t have everyone today, but a lot of new kids got a chance to get a feel for it.

“Angell slowed it down with two hurdles to go in his race. He wasn’t challenged.”

Freshman Ray Adonis finished ninth in the frosh-soph 1600.

Manteca’s Julianna Flores and East Union Carmen Haro both ran in the varsity girls 100 hurdles and Alex Del Real competed in the long jump for the Lancers.
