Weston Ranch was able to erase a six-point halftime deficit, outscoring host Bradshaw Christian down the stretch for a 68-64 win Thursday in the first round of the Bradshaw Christian Tournament.
Bradshaw Christian held a 32-26 halftime lead, but saw it dwindle away when the Cougars (1-0) broke loose for 24 third quarter points, while holding Bradshaw Christian to just nine.
“It was our first real game and we’re 1-0,” Weston Ranch head coach Ryan Bono said. “We have a long ways to go; we were rusty and had a lot of turnovers in the first half, but the players came out and played hard.
“It was really nice to see them fight.”
Sophomore Dylan Alexander and teammate Andre Beard paced the Cougars with 17 points, while LaDra Befford finished in double-digits with 15.
Weston Ranch will continue tournament action at 8:30 p.m. when they meet up with Valley Christian.
Ripon Christian trailed 35-16 heading into halftime, but mounted a serious comeback by outscoring Capital Christian 10-2 in the third period to cut the deficit to 11.
“I was pretty pleased with how well we played,” Ripon Christian head coach Ron Vander Molen said. “Especially in that second half.”
Logan Vos was the Knights’ sole scoring option, turning in a team-high 19 points, including five 3-pointers.
Ripon Christian will continue tournament action today in Galt.
McCreath exploded for 13 first-half points and the Indians (1-1) trailed 30-26 at the half. McCreath got his fourth and fifth quickly, spelling the end for Ripon’s chances.
“We came out and couldn’t hit the side of the barn in the first quarter,” Ripon head coach Rod Wright said. “We didn’t take bad shots, but we just couldn’t hit them.
“The shots just wouldn’t fall.”
Ripon held a 37-36 lead when McCreath was excused from play, and Granada responded by outscoring the Indians 20-10 the rest of the way. Ripon will try and get back in the win column at 5 p.m. when they meet up with Santa Teresa of San Jose in consolation action.
