Weston Ranch sweeps Kimball to continue hot start

Weston Ranch High’s volleyball team continued two streaks in its Valley Oak League opener with visiting Kimball of Tracy Thursday.

The Cougars came out on top in three games (25-22, 25-17, 25-19), marking their third straight victory by a sweep and fifth overall. They improved to 5-2 on the season.

Miranda Holmes led the way with six kills, five blocks and four aces. Brandy Bowers added five aces and three kills, Niki Rayray picked up eight digs and Aloni Etu finished with nine assists.

Weston Ranch will take its little hot streak to Manteca High next Tuesday.

Sonora 3, Sierra 0

In Sonora, Sierra (0-1, 2-3) started strong but couldn’t keep pace with one of the VOL’s annual title contenders. The T’Wolves lost by scores of 21-25, 8-25, 14-25.

Ally Walljasper posted four kills and four blocks, while Gabby Olmo chipped in six assists to go with three aces.

Oakdale 3, Lathrop 0

In Oakdale, the Spartans (0-1, 1-5) were outmatched in three sets (8-25, 12-25, 17-25).

Janel Butler did all she could, producing three kills, five assists and eight service points with three aces. Cherubine Consol contributed five digs, while Briana Lopez and Martina Carillo added four apiece.

Southern League

Ripon Christian 3, Waterford 0

In Ripon, the defending SL champion Knights (1-0, 3-2) began their title defense in dominating fashion — 25-7, 25-8, 25-11.

Twins Mikeala and Morgan Alger came up with eight kills and six blocks, respectively. Stephanie Van de Pol and Andi Shelton each recorded four aces, with Van de Pol adding 12 assists. Kaylie Colyn and Brittany Petlansky checked in with four digs apiece.


Oakdale 2, Lathrop 0

Luisa Serrato fired five kills, Stephanie Maduli had five digs and Alycia Rodriguez dished out six assists for the Spartans, who fell by scores of 11-25, 17-25.

Kimball 2, Weston Ranch 1

The Cougars (0-1, 5-2) recovered well from a slow start but couldn’t finish it off — 14-25, 25-23, 7-15.

Taylor Holiday churned out two kills and three blocks, Vanessa Contreras had four blocks and Alexandra Marapao chipped in four assists.


Weston Ranch 2, Kimball 1

The Cougars (1-0, 5-1) bounced back from dropping the first set to win (23-25, 25-11, 15-10).

Leading the way were Elizabeth Alexander (six kills), Kelli Laughlin (eight aces) and Clarissa Gonzales (six aces).

Sonora 2, Sierra 0

The Timberwolves were swept (17-25, 11-25) but got solid efforts from Haley Silva (four digs), Janelle Thomasen (four assists) and Monique Angel (two aces).
