WRESTLING: Sierra's Alexa Garcia starts 2-0 at state tourney

BAKERSFIELD — Alexa Garcia is positioned to garner another medal at the CIF State Wrestling Championships at Mechanics Bank Arena.
On Thursday, she was the only wrestler among six local qualifiers to advance to the quarterfinal round which begins today at 3:45 p.m.
The Sierra High senior made quick work of her first two opponents in the 189-pound division, pinning Bethany Aviles (Warren) in 1 minute, 52 seconds and Socorro Aguilar (Half Moon Bay) in 1:15. Seeded third, Garcia faces off with No. 6 Hollie Espinoza of Rancho Cotate today. The winner is catapulted to the semifinal round Saturday and guaranteed a medal.
The rest of the area qualifiers dropped their first-round contests and will have to work through the consolation bracket starting this morning at 9.
Ripon sophomore Katelynn Cardoza, the No. 8 seed at 143, was upset by Castro Valley’s Samantha Garcia in the opening round. Garcia won via fall in 5:13.
Ripon teammate Alyssa Oliver drew top-seeded 116-pounder Monica Garcia (Hillcrest), who won by pin in 1 minute.
Lathrop freshman Janida Garcia was outpointed 6-2 in her 121-pound opener against Pioneer Valley’s Mya Velasquez. Sierra 111-pounder Cami Jarmon also dropped a 6-2 decision, coming up short against Salinas’ Martha Alvarez.
East Union’s Tyler Diaz, the lone male competitor from the area, was matched with No. 1 138-pounder Alex Ramirez of Rowland, who won via tech fall in 3:49.
