STOCKTON (AP) -- Kevin Merrell hit a two-run triple in the fifth inning, and Jesus Luzardo struck out 10 hitters over five innings as the Stockton Ports defeated the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes 5-3 on Wednesday. The Ports swept the three-game series with the win.
Angel Duno got Omar Estevez to ground out with a runner on second to end the game for his first save of the season.
The triple by Merrell came in the midst of a four-run inning and gave the Ports a 3-1 lead. Later in the inning, Josh Phegley hit an RBI single, scoring Merrell.
Following the big inning, the Quakes cut into the deficit in the seventh inning when Gavin Lux and Cody Thomas scored on an error.
The Ports tacked on another run in the seventh when Merrell scored on a wild pitch.
Luzardo (1-1) picked up the win after he walked three while allowing one run and two hits.
Andrew Sopko (1-1) went 4 1/3 innings, allowing three runs and four hits in the California League game. He also struck out five and walked one.
