While it wasn’t the grand finish to his prep career that he had hoped for, Lyons still got to see top-notch competition in the prestigious 52nd Golden West Invitational at Folsom High’s Prairie City Stadium.

He put together a solid effort in the 110-meter hurdles, placing fifth with a 14.44-second time against some of the nation’s best. Lyons later finished sixth in the 300 hurdles in 39.96.

“I was trying to redeem myself from the state meet, but I didn’t have good practices last week and my mindset wasn’t all that good,” Lyons said. “My 110 wasn’t that bad, but by the 300 I had already checked out.”

And his effort in the California Interscholastic Federation State Championships in Clovis over two weeks ago wasn’t all that bad either. He clocked personal-best times in both events (14.33 in the 110, 38.89 in the 300) and took eighth in the 110 finals.

“I could have ran a 13.9 Saturday, I know I have it in me I just haven’t ran my race yet,” Lyons said.

Oregon-bound Johnathan Cabral of Agoura won both hurdle events in his final attempts at breaking national high school records. He came up short and instead ended up with the second best (13.41, 110; 35.76, 300) wind-legal times ever posted at the meet.
