SANTA CLARA (AP) — The San Francisco 49ers have placed rookie receiver Jalen Hurd and cornerback Jason Verrett on injured reserve.

The team also brought back receiver Jordan Matthews and cornerback Dontae Johnson on Thursday to replace them on the roster.

Hurd has been dealing with a back injury since training camp and was initially expected back this week. But he hasn’t recovered as quickly as hoped and now will be shut down for at least eight more weeks.

Verrett struggled in his only game this season two weeks ago against Pittsburgh. He also injured his knee during that game.

The Niners are allowed to activate two players off injured reserve after eight weeks and both Hurd and Verrett are candidates for that.

Matthews spent time in training camp with San Francisco and adds a veteran receiver to a young group.

Johnson played four seasons with San Francisco from 2014-17 and also spent time with the team this summer in training camp.
