Javier Hernandez (138 pounds), Gabe Barnett (152), Dyllan Heald (160) and Tristan Smith (285) brought home gold medals from the Trans Valley League wrestling championships on Saturday at Hilmar High School.

“I was especially happy with our four champions,” Indians coach Glen White said. “Javier wrestled a few pretty tough matches, but wrestled well. Gabe won by injury default in the finals after a kid from Hughson injured his knee.

“After being down in the finals, Dyllan pulled off the biggest upset of the day by pinning the first seed in spectacular fashion. And Tristan dominated a tough opponent from MC and won decisively.”

The Top-4 finishers advanced to the two-day Sac-Joaquin Section Division V championships Friday at Sonora.

Qualifying with second-place finishes were Matt Fisher (106) and Donny Fontillas (113). Angelo Baciocco (145), Jacob Rhodes (182), Akash Bathh (195) and Isaac Adams (220) were third and Brandon Barnett (120), Anthony Latno (126) and Andy Yciano (170) finished fourth.

“Everyone wrestled really well today,” White said. “I was definitely happy with our progress.

“Hopefully we’ll continue to improve and have a strong showing at Divisionals in Sonora next weekend.”

Ripon finished second to Escalon in the team standings.
