TURLOCK – What the Ripon Sea Lions lacked in quantity at Saturday’s dual meet with the Turlock Sea Dogs, it made up for with quality swims.

The Sea Lions pushed the Mid-Valley Swim League’s largest club in a 1,936-1,743 loss. Ripon kept the team score close by winning the girls’ competition, 1,088-907, riding sweeping performances by Andria Martin and Rosie Vaughn.

Martin and Vaughn won all three of their individual events in record time.

Competing against 13- and 14-year-olds, Martin notched personal-best times in the 50-yard butterfly, 50 backstroke and 50 freestyle, shaving more than a second-and-a-half off those three strokes. Vaughn was even better in the girls’ 17-18 division, erasing more than 3 collective seconds off her 100 individual medley, 50 butterfly and 50 breast.

But to beat Turlock’s girls, Martin and Vaughn would need some help, and they received it from double-event winners Rylee Beidleman, Madeline Curtiss, and Chloe Winter.

Curtiss sandwiched victories in the 50 freestyle and 25 breaststroke around a third-place finish in the 25 butterfly, while Beidleman won the 100 individual medley and 50 breaststroke in 11-12s. She showed promise in a second-place finish in the 50 butterfly, taking more than a quarter of a second off her personal-best time.

Winter set a blistering pace in the girls’ 13-14 100 individual medley and 100 freestyle races, before slowing down in a runner-up finish in the 50 fly.

In all, 43 swimmers earned “Super Sea Lion” honors, improving their personal-best times in each event they swam without receiving a disqualification.

The boys were paced by a pair of its youngest swimmers, Sam Branco, competing against 6-and-unders, and Jack Gioffre in 9-10s.

Branco won the 25 and 50 freestyle races, and then eked out a personal best in the 25 backstroke.

Gioffre established new personal marks in the 100 individual medley, 50 butterfly and 50 breaststroke, taking off nearly 4 seconds off his times.
