Kopach, Thurman lead Nuts to win over Giants

SAN JOSE  (AP) — Connor Kopach hit a two-run double in the second inning, and Nick Thurman had two hits and scored two runs as the Modesto Nuts defeated the San Jose Giants 8-7 on Wednesday.

The double by Kopach started the scoring in a four-run inning and gave the Nuts a 3-2 lead. Later in the inning, Luis Liberato and Joe Rizzo hit RBI singles.

The Nuts later added two runs in the third and one in the fifth. In the third, Kopach hit an RBI single, while Jack Larsen hit an RBI single in the fifth.

San Jose saw its comeback attempt come up short after Chris Corbett scored on a wild pitch in the ninth inning to cut the Modesto lead to 8-7.

Collin Kober (1-0) got the win with 2 1/3 innings of scoreless, one-hit relief while San Jose starter Aaron Phillips (0-3) took the loss in the California League game.

The Giants left some scoring opportunities on the table, stranding 13 baserunners in the loss. For the Giants, Gio Brusa homered and doubled.
