MODESTO – The Modesto Nuts took the lead in the bottom of the first inning Monday night and never again trailed in a 20-run assault on the way to a 20-3 shellacking of the visiting Stockton Ports at John Thurman Field in front of 3,514 fans.
The Nuts (38-38) took a 20-2 run in fifth inning when the lights went out in the stadium, forcing a 30-minute delay. Modesto then took its foot off the gas and the Ports (26-50) added another run in the seventh.
Stockton took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Shane McGuire (3 for 4, two RBI, triple, double) doubled in Marcos Brito. In the fourth inning Mariano Ricciardi scored from third for the Ports when Junior Perez drew a throw to first on a strike-three wild pitch to make the score 6-2.
The wheels came off the Stockton wagon in the next two innings when Modesto tallied seven runs in both the fourth and fifth innings to go ahead 20-2. McGuire singled in Max Muncy in the seventh inning for the final score of 20-3.
Robert Perez Jr. (double) knocked in five runs and scored three for the Nuts. Edwin Arroyo (2 for 5, double, two runs) and Walking Cabrera (3 for 6, two runs) added three RBI apiece and Harry Ford (3 for 4, four runs) and Ben Ramirez (3 for 5, run) chipped in two runs apiece.
The two teams have the night off and continue their six game series Wednesday night at 7:05 p.m.
