WASHINGTON (AP) — Bryce Harper made a tumbling barehanded catch in centerfield and then led off the ninth inning with a double to set the stage for Ian Desmond's two-out game-ending home run that gave the Washington Nationals a 5-4 victory over the visiting Arizona Diamondbacks on Wednesday night.

In the sixth inning, Harper fell down in the right-center gap while attempting to catch a fly ball off Jason Kubel's bat. As he landed in the grass, Harper secured the ball in his ungloved right hand.

Harper, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2010 draft, also had his first multi-hit game with two doubles and scored his first career run by knocking the ball out of the catcher's glove.

The Nationals snapped their own five-game losing streak and ended the three-game winning streak of the Diamondbacks.

BRAVES 15, PHILLIES 13

ATLANTA (AP) — Chipper Jones hit a two-run homer in the 11th inning and the Braves overcame Carlos Ruiz's seven RBIs to outlast the Phillies.

The seesaw game saw the Braves rally from a 6-0 deficit against Roy Halladay, then come back from four runs down in the eighth.

Dan Uggla led off the Atlanta 11th with a single. Jones just missed a homer on a ball that landed barely foul to right, then connected against Brian Sanches (0-1).

Jones' homer ended the Braves' eight-game losing streak to the Phillies.

Brian McCann hit a grand slam for Atlanta. Befitting a crazy game, he was poked in the eye with an errant high-five from teammate Michael Bourn after the homer.

ROCKIES 8, DODGERS 5

DENVER (AP) — Pinch hitter Jason Giambi launched a three-run homer off Scott Elbert in the ninth inning, lifting the Colorado Rockies to an 8-5 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Wednesday.

With first base open and one out, the Dodgers elected to pitch to Giambi. Carlos Gonzalez was waiting on deck — he'd hit two home runs off NL Cy Young winner Clayton Kershaw earlier in the game.

The Rockies took a 2-1 lead into the late innings before it turned wild at Coors Field.

The Dodgers scored twice in the eighth, but Colorado bounced back for three in the bottom half for a 5-3 lead. Los Angeles tied it with two runs in the ninth.

CUBS 3, REDS 1

CINCINNATI (AP) — Bryan LaHair and Ian Stewart hit solo homers — a major outburst for the power-challenged Cubs — and Jeff Samardzija pitched into the eighth inning in a victory over the Reds.

The Cubs opened the rain-shortened series with only their third multihomer game of the season. They managed only nine home runs in April, the fewest in the majors. LaHair's shot off Bronson Arroyo (1-1) gave him six overall.

Samardzija (3-1) allowed three hits in 7 2-3 innings and contained Jay Bruce, holding the NL's player of the week to a harmless double. Carlos Marmol retired all three batters in the ninth for his second save in four chances.

The Cubs have had only six save opportunities this season, underscoring their early struggles.

PADRES 5, BREWERS 0

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Jeff Suppan pitched five solid innings to win his first game since 2010, leading the Padres to a win over the Brewers.

Suppan, called up from Triple-A Tucson to start in place of the injured Cory Luebke, had not pitched or won in the majors since Oct. 3, 2010. The 37-year-old Suppan limited the Brewers to four singles, walked two and struck out two as he combined with three relievers for the shutout.

It was Suppan's first victory since a 6-1 win over Colorado as a member of the St. Louis Cardinals on the final day of the 2010 regular season.

Cameron Maybin and Jose Guzman each drove in two runs as the Padres won their first series of the season by taking two of three from Milwaukee. The Brewers have lost five of seven.

ASTROS 8, METS 1

HOUSTON (AP) — Chris Johnson had four hits, homered twice and drove in a career-high six runs to back up another solid outing by Wandy Rodriguez, and the Astros beat the Mets to complete a three-game sweep.

The win gave Houston its first series sweep of the season and first series win since the opening three games.

Johnson's first homer of the season off Chris Schwinden (0-1) was a three-run shot to the Crawford Boxes in left field that put Houston up 3-0 in the second inning. Jed Lowrie and Brian Bogusevic got on base with consecutive singles.

Johnson went deep again in his next at-bat, this one a two-run homer to left center that pushed the lead to 5-0. It was the first career multi-homer game for Johnson and first by an Astro this year.

Rodriguez (3-2) yielded six hits and a run in seven innings to lower his ERA to 1.64.

CARDINALS 12, PIRATES 3

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Carlos Beltran drove in a career-best seven runs with a pair of three-run home runs and RBI single in the first three innings, leading the way as the Cardinals punished A.J. Burnett and the Pirates.

Rookie Lance Lynn (5-0) joined James Shields as the major leagues' only five-game winners, allowing three hits and two runs in 6 2-3 innings with six strikeouts to beat the Pirates for the second time in three starts. Lynn has a 1.61 ERA as the replacement starter for Chris Carpenter, sidelined indefinitely with nerve issues in his right shoulder.

Burnett (1-2) entered with a 1.38 ERA but trailed 4-0 after six pitches. The right-hander surrendered 12 runs on 12 hits in 2 2/3 innings.
