RENTON, Wash. (AP) — The Seattle Seahawks have called a news conference for Friday morning amid a report they have reached a contract extension with coach Pete Carroll.

NFL Network reported Thursday night, citing a “source,” that Carroll and the Seahawks had reached agreement on a contract extension. Carroll’s original five-year deal with Seattle was set to expire after the 2014 season.

The Seahawks announcement did not specify the nature of the news conference and team officials would not confirm the report of an extension for Carroll.

Thompson, Pak share Kraft Nabisco lead

RANCHO MIRAGE, Calif. (AP) — Lexi Thompson’s play around the greens has held her back at times in her young LPGA Tour career, lagging behind her powerful long game.

On Friday in the Kraft Nabisco Championship, her putting touch carried her to the top of the leaderboard in the first major championship of the year.

The 19-year-old Thompson, already a three-time winner on the tour, shot a bogey-free 8-under 64 at Mission Hills for a share of the lead with Se Ri Pak.

Tires the talk of Texas ahead of Sunday’s race

FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) — Tires remained the hot topic at Texas Motor Speedway, where NASCAR and Goodyear took the unprecedented step of discussing the compound selected for Sunday’s race before a single lap had been turned.

Goodyear’s multi-zone tread tire is making its season debut at Texas, where speeds inched toward 200 mph in Friday’s opening practice session.

There was one major incident, 100 minutes into practice, when Kurt Busch wrecked hard into the outside wall. Busch, winner of last week’s race at Martinsville, appeared to blow a left rear tire before losing control of his Chevrolet and crashing.
