Stadium supporters to begin petition drive

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Organizers behind a proposed NFL stadium that could become home for the San Diego Chargers and Oakland Raiders will kick off a petition drive Thursday to bring the plan before voters.

Supporters in the Los Angeles suburb of Carson need about 8,000 signatures from local voters to qualify the plan for the ballot.

The Raiders and Chargers are planning a shared stadium in Carson if both teams fail to get new stadiums in their current hometowns.

The election could be bypassed if the project is approved by city government.

A rival proposal tied to St. Louis Rams owner Stan Kroenke calls for an 80,000-seat stadium in nearby Inglewood.

Under current NFL rules, the next opportunity for a team to file to relocate would be in January 2016.
