Villegas leads Riviera with 63 while No. 1 ranked Spieth struggles

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Camilo Villegas hasn’t make a cut all year and has only broken 70 one time in four previous trips to Riviera, so it was mildly surprising to see him with an 8-under 63 to build a three-shot lead Thursday in the Northern Trust Open.

That wasn’t the biggest surprise.

One spot from the bottom of the leaderboard was Jordan Spieth, the world’s No. 1 player who shot an 8-over 79 on one of his favorite courses. It was his worst start ever as a pro, and his highest score since an 80 in the third round of the 2014 Tour Championship.

WOMEN’S

AUSTRALIAN OPEN

ADELAIDE, Australia (AP) — SooBin Kim shot a course-record 9-under 63 to leave defending champion and top-ranked Lydia Ko seven strokes behind in the Women’s Australian Open.

The 22-year-old Kim, a Canadian-based South Korean, had a three-stroke lead over American Casey Grice and Germany’s Caroline Masson on The Grange’s West course.

Five-time champion Karrie Webb of Australia was four strokes back after a 67.

Ko opened with a 70. She won the New Zealand Women’s Open on Sunday.

Kim, who moved to Canada with her family when she was 10, birdied seven of her first 12 holes. The former University of Washington player broke the women’s course record of 66 set by Australia’s Nadina Taylor at an amateur event in 2000.

MAYBANK

CHAMPIONSHIP MALAYSIA

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) — Australia’s Nathan Holman shot a 7-under 64 in hot conditions at Royal Selangor to take a one-stroke lead in the inaugural Maybank Championship Malaysia.

England’s Danny Willett, coming off a victory two weeks ago in Dubai, was a stroke back along with countryman Tommy Fleetwood, American Peter Uihlein, France’s Alexander Levy, the Philippines’ Angelo Que and Spain’s Jorge Campillo. South Africa’s Louis Oosthuizen had a 67, and Germany’s Martin Kaymer shot 71.

The tournament is sanctioned by the European and Asian tours.
