Wondolowski helps Earthquakes past Impact

SANTA CLARA (AP) — Chris Wondolowski, Marvin Chavez and Shea Salinas scored to lead the San Jose Earthquakes to a 3-0 victory over the Montreal Impact in group play of the CONCACAF Champions League on Tuesday.

San Jose remained alive in Group 5 with the resounding victory, but the Earthquakes need help from the Impact to advance. Group leaders Heredia can clinch the top spot and the only berth in the knockout round with a draw or win in Montreal next Tuesday. That would make the Guatemalans’ trip to San Jose on Oct. 23 meaningless.

The Impact’s hopes are also still alive, but just barely. They need a convincing win over Heredia next week in their last group match, and then a narrow win by San Jose against Heredia.
