Atlas girls win beach tournament

The under-10 Atlas girls of the Manteca Futbol Club hit the beach before beginning a demanding stretch in its outdoor schedule.

Atlas captured the inaugural Copa Cabana Beach Soccer Tournament in Pismo Beach, avenging their only loss of the tournament in the final. Isabel Paniagua earned the clean sheet and four different players scored for Atlas in a 4-0 victory over the Voodoo Dolls.

Savannah Cordero, Ashleigh Garcia, Isabella Avila and Jasmine Cochiaosue each found the back of the net for Atlas, which made the transition from grass to sand look easy and fun.

It was Atlas’ first time competing in a sand soccer tournament.

Team manager Maria Cordero said the girls entered the weekend with the mindset to have fun – and even developed quirky nicknames for one another, such as “Sharkbite” and “Popcorn.” However, when it became clear MFC had a shot at winning the title Atlas went into attack mode.

Atlas went 2-1-1 in tournament play with Isabella Richmond and Isabella Pires also contributing goals. Atlas defeated the Hawks in their opener 6-1 and then drew even with the Zoros 4-4. The Voodoo Dolls appeared to have the advantage in the final after downing Atlas 4-3 in their third game.

The schedule only gets tougher from here.

Atlas qualified for this weekend’s Cross Regional playoff in Davis after finishing second in NorCal Region 7-8. MFC will play Barcelona Bay Area Academy, which finished atop Region 2.

One week later, Atlas will head to Sacramento’s Cherry Island soccer complex for the California Cup.
