Buiteago, Rangers roll into quarters

MORGAN HILL — The Manteca Rangers under-14 girls soccer team will continue their state championship hunt in Redding.

Abby Buiteago made sure of it, dominating the preliminary round of the Cal North Association Cup over the weekend.

Buiteago scored seven of the team’s eight goals, including a hat trick in an opening-round victory over the Visalia Galaxy, as the Rangers won earned a berth in the quarterfinals later this month.

Manteca went 3-0 in bracket play, leaving little to chance.

Goalie Min Kerr-Schifrin gave up just one goal all weekend, earning shutouts in her final two games. She was helped by defenders Ashlee Miller, Alison Bitle, Skylar Treacy and Paige Gines.

But the round belonged to Buiteago, who dazzled with her marksmanship and touch around the net.

Buiteago scored all three goals against the Galaxy, with assists from Teska Hapig-Ward, Destiny Hernandez and Annisity Miller.

She was only getting started.

Buiteago had two goals apiece in a 3-0 victory over the Capital Valley Twisters and a 2-0 decision against the Central Valley Jaguars.

Julia Villagon also had a goal and an assist, while Samantha Klump, Carly Morrish and AJ Hoyer had assists for the Rangers.
