If defense wins championships, Manteca Futbol Club’s under-11 girls Newcastle might be on its way to capturing the NorCal State Cup title.
Newcastle kept the sheets clean in its quarterfinal and semifinal matches this past weekend at Woodland Community Park in Woodland, including an upset of top-seeded El Dorado United Eclipse Sol.
Fourth-seeded Manteca FC is 7-0-1 through two-plus stages of the state cup and will square off with No. 2 Santa Rosa United Tremors in the finals at a site and date yet to be determined in two weekends.
In September and October, Newcastle dominated in the preliminaries, going 3-0 while outscoring opponents, 21-2. In the second round, it tied once and won two more while scoring eight goals versus one given up.
The trend continued Saturday with a 3-0 win over Mustang Pride. Lejla Pepic, Dayanna Hernandez and Alexis Vilarino each scored a goal, while Linnea Natale contributed an assist.
Hernandez and Pepic struck with one more goal apiece in the 2-0 victory over El Dorado.
The Newcastle defense features Selena Alverez, Maddie Cuculich, Nathalie Munguia and goalkeeper Andrea Eusebio. Daisy Galindo and Faith Chavez have played well at midfield.
Manteca United split its two contests Saturday at Northgate Park.
First was a 3-2 loss to Stockton. Ricardo Alvarez and Mark Velazquez netted one goal apiece. Andrew Crawford and Joshua Vega kept Manteca in the contest with tough defensive play.
Manteca United rebounded by dispatching Modesto, 3-1. Alvarez and Velazquez again scored once each, with Giovanni Gomez also getting in on the action with a goal of his own. Jason Valdovinos and Noah Lintz keyed the defense.
