SALIDA — Sometimes all you can do is tip your cap.
After scoring four runs in the top of the first Saturday at Salida School, the site of the District 67 Junior Division All Star Tournament, the Spreckels Park all-stars were shut down the rest the way in suffering an 11-5 loss to Tracy National.
The first-round setback means that Spreckels will head to the loser’s bracket, where they will meet Patterson today at 5:30 p.m.
Patterson fell to Tracy American Saturday, 14-3.
The combined Titans-Bulldogs squad, which made headlines last week for splitting the top spot at the District 67 Tournament of Champions, smacked three straight hits off Tracy starter Eddie Lopez to start the game.
Makana Ward led off with a double up the third-base line and Logan Sanders and Buddy Reeder followed up with consecutive RBI singles.
Sanders touched on a passed ball while Reeder and Gerald Parente (walked) came around on Frankie Chavez’s two-run single.
That was all the rope Tracy National would allow Lopez, and once Jonah Wesely took over on the hill, it was lights out.
“I don’t think we’ve beaten (Wesely) in four tries over the past four years,” Spreckels assistant coach Eric English said. “The kid is a horse, but we made him throw a lot of pitches, so I’m sure everyone else in the tournament is happy.”
The hard-throwing southpaw mowed down the first four and six of the first seven Spreckels batters he faced. Wesely rung up 11, all told, before reaching his 90-pitch limit with the final batter Spreckels sent to the dish.
The Spreckels all-stars only managed four free passes and one hit on Wesely, a Parente double to deep center in the sixth.
Parente made it 11-5 when he scored on a Wesely balk moments later.
Tracy answered with a four-spot on Frankie Chavez in the first thanks to two Spreckels errors and two infield singles.
Tracy would add two each in the second and third before putting the game on ice with three in the fifth.
Both Wesely and Lopez hit monster shots that would have cleared the fence easily, had one existed at the Salida diamond.
Chavez (3 K), Alex Jorgensen (4 K) and Parente (K) all spent time on the hill for Spreckels, but were used sparingly in order to preserve their pitch counts.
“We should come out of the loser’s bracket,” English said. “That’s what we’re expecting. The boys fought hard, and that’s a mark of both (the Titans and Bulldogs).
“They won’t give up.”
Earlier in the day, Weston Ranch downed Salida, 12-2, and Mountain House knocked off Lathrop 11-1.
Weston Ranch meets Mountain House today at 8:30 a.m., while Lathrop will face Salida at 2:30.
The Tracy squads will square off at 11:30.
