SPARKS, Nev – After opening The Summer Circuit V Championship at The Resort at Red Hawk with a blistering 4-under-par round of 68, East Union graduate Kyle Harman closed tournament play with a 75, winning the Northern California Professional Golfers Association event with a combined score of 143 Tuesday.
Harman opened play Monday on fire, turning in a near-perfect round with six birdies and 11 pars. His opening round gave him a three-stroke cushion over the tournament field that he wouldn’t relinquish. His closing round of 75 on the Lakes Course was tied for the lowest round of the day and sealed the deal on Harman’s second tournament win in six tries. He outlasted Cody Blick of Danville (71-75-146) by three strokes.
“It was pretty nice how I started the tournament out, getting a birdie on the first hole and just missing a birdie on the second,” Harman said. “I finished the front (nine) with a 6-under 30, and I was pretty much putting lights out.
“It was just one of those days where everything was working for me.”
Harman’s play started off slowly on day two, opening the round with an uncharacteristic double bogey. He was able to rebound in a hurry, posting an eagle on the sixth to pull himself right back into the driver’s seat of the championship.
“It’s a 505-yard hole, but you can cut a corner to shorten it out,” Harman said. “I was hitting my driver good all day, so I just teed one up and let one rip and hit it about 340-yards. I had a 5-iron from there and I put it to about 20-feet.
“I definitely wanted that putt because I started off badly, and it got me back down to a realistic score to have a chance to win.”
Harman’s win catapults him to the top of the Boys Pro Power Rankings in the 16-18-year-old division, giving him an opportunity to close out the summer season as the NCPGA’s No. 1 golfer.
“Being No. 1 at the end of this is my main goal, so I am going into this with the mindset that I am going to win and that I am going to play well,” Harman said. “I’m focused on going and playing like I know I can play. Hopefully I can win it. I want to shoot two rounds in the 60s.
“Obviously, my overall goal is to win the tournament and be the No. 1 player.”
Harman will have to put it all together on the 6,500-yard par-70 Pasatiempo Golf Club in Santa Cruz. Round 1 will have a 7 a.m. tee-time on Monday, with round 2 following at the same time on Tuesday.
