Brian McAlister drilled a shot up the right field line that rolled all the way to the wall for a two-run triple in the bottom of the sixth Friday at Sierra High, giving the Spreckels Park Senior Division all-stars a lead they would not relinquish in a 7-4 win over Tracy.
Spreckels will host Game 2 of a scheduled three-game series today at 5:30 p.m., again at Sierra.
If the hometown team prevails, it will be crowned the District 67 champion. If not, a decisive Game 3 will be played in Tracy.
McAllister’s triple, which scored Adrian Valencia (walked) and Alex Arreola (hit by pitch), gave Spreckels a 6-4 lead.
John Waggy’s ensuing RBI single up the middle added the finishing touches.
“I was really pleased,” Spreckels Park skipper Greg Leland said. “For the most part we played pretty good baseball. Brian McAllister came through in the clutch.”
Waggy got the start and the hill and worked his allotted 60 pitches well, sending down five by way of strikes and allowing just one unearned run.
Waggy finished off the fourth with his final pitch, a fastball at the knees for a called strike three.
“Johnny’s tough,” Leland said. “He’s the kind of guy that’s going to load everyone up on his shoulders. We wanted to keep his pitch count down so he could potentially come back and throw if we need him again.”
Adrian Valencia worked the fifth and sixth, allowing three (one earned) and ended his outing with a hook that caught its victim looking.
Joey Valencia (S) worked a one-two-three seventh highlighted by Adrian Valencia’s tracking down of the final out on a ball hit to deep left-center.
After Tracy broke through with a run in the third, Spreckels answered with three of its own in the home half when Aiden Foster (single) and Rodrigo Contreras (double) led off with back-to-back knocks.
Two came around on RBI walks, and Waggy added a sacrifice fly to center.
Peter Moreno scored in the fourth when he wore a pitch and came around on a passed ball.
Spreckels and Tracy were the only two District 67 Little League organizations to field senior division all-star teams this year.
The winner of the series will move on to the Section 3 Tournament.
Tomorrow at 10 a.m., Salida will meet Tracy National B in a winner’s bracket contest on Field 1, while Lathrop will battle Tracy American A in consolation bracket action on Field 2.
