Spreckels Park BMX in Manteca played host to another special event on Sunday, drawing some of the pioneers of the sport from all over Northern California.

Ceres-based Jeff Burgess, who had raced for some of the premier factory race teams in the Early 70s put together a ‘First Decade BMXer’ show and shine, bringing out dozens of vintage BMX race machines.  A special Race was held, with racers young and old riding the classic machines on the track and bringing joy and a sense of history to all who attended.

In regular race action, the “old guys” (and ladies) stole the show, with a full gate of eight 41-and-Over Cruiser competitors battling for the top prize.  Jeff Ross of Fresno came out victorious, with Manteca’s Mike Melvin close behind.

In 13-Novice action, Chase Stinhilver of Hughson was able to hold off Tracy local Cristian Gonzaleaz and Manteca’s Sean Delong for an impressive win.

Races are held on Sundays. Signup and practice times are from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. with racing starting as soon as possible. ABA BMX membership information is available on race day.

The track is located at Spreckels Avenue, cross street Moffat Blvd.  Admission is free for spectators, and there is a $10 entry fee for racing.  Helmet, long sleeves, pants and a BMX or mountain-style bicycle are required to compete. Loaner equipment is available at the track.
