LATHROP — Northgate put up four runs in the third and fifth innings Wednesday and held off a late rally by Spreckels Park to post an 8-6 consolation win in District 67 Junior All-Star action at Mossdale Landing Park.
Northgate plays Salida Saturday morning at 11 in the championship round and must win to force a winner-take-all contest on Sunday. Salida knocked Northgate into the consolation bracket with a 9-5 in the winners-bracket semifinal on Tuesday.
Trailing 8-4 going into the top of the seventh, Spreckels Park’s Brycen Diego led off with a walk followed by errors off the bats of Dominic Tolentino and Kevin Rosenblum to load the bases with no out. Sante Duarte (double) brought in Diego on a groundout as did Lucas Stackpole with Tolentino, but that was as close as Spreckels Park would come.
With the score tied at 4-4 in the fifth, Northgate’s Lucas Krenz looped a two-out Texas League single to score Anthony Flores (two runs) and Ivan Vieira (two runs, RBI). Nate Rodriguez doubled in Krenz and Dylan Lee scored on a wild pitch to make the score 8-4.
With Spreckels Park leading 3-1 in the third, Vieira cleared the bases when his bases-loaded single to left was misplayed and he ended up on third. Vieira scored on an error off the bat of Krenz, one of four Spreckels Park errors in the inning.
Spreckels Park took advantage of Northgate miscues to get on the board.
In the second inning, Dominic Tolentino reached on an error and another error helped him get to third when he scored on a single by Xavier Palacios for a 1-0 Spreckels Park lead. Spencer Kim and Brycen Diego both scored on wild pitches in the third for a 3-0 lead and in the fourth, Aiden Burk singled to lead off the frame and following two more errors scored on a sacrifice fly by Kim.
Steven Aquila went 3 for 4 for Spreckels Park.
