Braves outfielder Isaac Maldonado rounds third on his way to scoring the Braves’ only run in a 8-1 loss to the Pirates Friday.
The Braves didn’t help an already challenging task when they spotted the Pirates a 2-0 lead in the first inning of the Manteca Little League minor division championship, and things didn’t get any easier in the Braves’ 8-1 season-ending loss Friday.

Pirates starting pitcher Kyle Rachels surrendered just one run through six innings of work. Needing just 76 pitches to take out the Braves, who had upset the previously undefeated Pirates in a 9-8 win Wednesday.

Rachels was one-batter shy of the complete game when he threw his 73rd pitch for the second out of the sixth inning. Pitch counts allow a pitcher to complete the at-bat of the player he’s facing when he throws his 75th pitch, giving the Pirates’ starter one chance to close the deal.

He didn’t miss, striking out the final hitter and lifting the Pirates into the District 67 Tournament of Champions.

The Pirates cruise to an easy victory, getting RBI doubles from Andrew Brunn and Uriah Bonds. Logan Quan came around to score on Bonds’ double after reaching base by getting hit by a pitch.

Defensively, the Pirates were in postseason form, getting solid play from shortstop Alex Gouveia and first baseman Brunn. Rachels did a good job of fielding his position, turning in three defensive put outs. Dylan Gross smashed a double for the Braves and Isaac Maldonado notched the clubs’ only run, coming around to score after wearing a pitch on the helmet in the third.

The Pirates will advance to the first round of the TOC’s traveling to Tracy for the district 67 tournament.
