MORGAN HILL —The Manteca Rangers under-13 boys team didn’t take long to garner their first championship of the season, winning the Central Valley Magic Cup III  Silver Division title with a 2-0 win over Premier Livermore Fusion in only their second tournament of the summer season.

The Rangers opened tournament play at the Morgan Hill Soccer Complex with a 2-2 tie with the Fusion, but separated themselves from the Livermore squad behind stellar defensive play from goalie Kevin Rodriguez.

“The boys came out a little flat on Saturday with two ties,” head coach E.J. Mariscol said. “But they managed to find their game on Sunday.”

The Rangers got goals from Israel Lopez , Juan Mata Jr., Michael Najera, Trevor Baum, Alex Veasquez and Tomas Suarez in tournament play.

The Rangers’ under-13 girls team also put together a successful tournament run, closing out the Breakerz Cup in Santa Cruz with a fourth- place overall finish.
