The Ripon High boys basketball team got off to a sluggish start, getting outscored 11-0 to start the game, but the Indians were able to bounce back and handle Hilmar 53-43 Friday in Trans Valley League action.
Ripon (6-1, 13-9 overall) eventually awoke, returning the favor with a 13-0 run to end the first quarter with the lead. The Indians would outscore Hilmar the rest of the way, putting the game out of reach with a 18-8 third quarter run.
Cole Herren reaped the benefits of Hilmar’s constant double and triple teams on post standout Jake McCreath, leading the Indians with 15 points. McCreath finished with 10 and Jared Ratto chipped in with nine.
“He knows it’s coming and he is doing a good job passing out of it to the open man,” Ripon head coach Rod Wright said of the double teams. “The greatest compliment is how many players it takes to defend him.
“Right now when he gets the ball, it’s taking two and three guys.”
The Indians will not be back on the court again until Feb. 4 when they play host to the Escalon Cougars in another huge TVL matchup. The Indians were able to stop the Cougars 60-48 in the two clubs’ first meeting.
Logan Vos led the Knights with 16 points, while teammate Isaac Norman poured in 15.
Ripon Christian (8-0, 16-5 overall) led Mariposa by one at the half, but trailed by a point heading into the final period. The Knights will try to run their perfect league streak to nine games Tuesday when they travel to Waterford to take on the Wildcats.
