Spreckels Park BMX hosted the final races of the 2011 season over the weekend with a special event Saturday-Sunday doubleheader.  Racers from all over Northern California made the trek to race on what some have dubbed “The Fastest Track in NorCal.”

In racing action, Saturday saw some of the fastest 35-over racers in the nation battle for the first ever 35-over open-amateur race.

Oakland’s Brian Simmons came out of the gate like a cannon and never looked back, taking a decisive victory into the 2012 national season. Howard Cato, and Bob Coover, both East Bay residents, rounded out the top three.

In other race action, many local riders came out with big wins on both days, including Danielle Hall of Ripon, who took the girls gold both days. Manteca’s Dominic Duran kept up his winning ways, claiming both 6-under expert main events. Stockton’s 9-year-old expert Zach Loftis made an impressive third straight pass during qualifying and brought home main event victories both days as well.

The 2012 racing season will begin again on January 1. Signup and practice times are from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. with racing starting as soon as possible. ABA BMX membership information is available on race day.

The track is located at Spreckels Avenue, cross street Moffat Blvd.  Admission is free for spectators, and there is a $10 entry fee for racing.  Helmet, long sleeves, pants and a BMX or mountain-style bicycle are required to compete. Loaner equipment is available at the track.
