LATHROP — The Lathrop Orioles spotted the Patterson Astros a 15-run lead before battling back with stellar relief pitching to almost close the gap, losing 19-16 in major Little League action on Wednesday.
The Astros led 17-2 going into the bottom of the third when the Orioles put up four runs behind an RBI triple by Alyssa Maynor (2 for 5) that scored Jaime Sifuentes. Maynor scored on a fielder’s choice by Alex Bolanos and Bolanos came all the way around on multiple errors. Ricky Langenfield singled and scored on an error off the bat of Nazir Jones-McCue (2 for 4, three runs) to make the score 17-6.
After a 1-2-3 inning for Lathrop relief pitcher Jones-McCue, who struck out the side in the top of the fourth, doubles by Riley Strongren (2 for 2, double, two runs) and Jaime Sifuentes along with singles by Xavier Ealy, Jones-McCue and two singles by Hernaldo Bolanos (3 for 4, two RBI, two runs) led to seven Orioles run in the bottom of the fourth to make the score 17-13.
Jones-McCue also struck out the side in the fifth but was victimized by a two-out fielding miscue, leading to a pair of two-out runs making the score 19-13.
Ben Grisham took the hill for the Orioles in the sixth, striking out the side in order. In the bottom of the frame, Jones-McCue, Hernaldo Bolanos and Stromgren all singled and scored, rounding out a 16-hit attack for Lathrop.
