TRACY — Leadoff hitters are supposed to get on base and knock in a run or two – but not necessarily knock the ball out of the yard. Do not tell that Kenny Wade.
The Spreckels Park leadoff batter got on base and then some Monday, going 3 for 3 with a three-run home run to finish with four RBI and three runs to lead his team to a 13-8 win over Tracy National in the District 67 Junior All-Star Tournament at Monticello School hosted by Tracy Little League. The win sets up a winner-take-all finale for the championship today at 5:30 p.m.
Wade’s homer gave Spreckels Park a 3-1 lead in the top of the second that it would not relinquish, but the big inning for Spreckels Park was the third. After Tracy National notched a run in the bottom of the second to come within 3-2, Spreckels Park pounded out five hits in the third for six runs and held on until the game was called due to darkness after six innings.
Brock Willenbrink had the big hit of the third for Spreckels Park on a two-RBI double with RBI singles by Wade, J.T. Ortiz-Martinez, Slyder Blythe (2 for 4, RBI, three runs) and a sacrifice fly by Joseph Lomeli. Hunter Frisk added to the attack, going 2 for 3 with a double.
The winner of tonight’s championship contest will move on to the Division 6 playoffs at Monticello School on Saturday.
