RIPON — Not much went wrong for Ripon High in an 82-55 home pasting of Summerville Friday night, the last non-league contest to count toward postseason power ratings.
The Indians’ three-headed backcourt monster of Matt Ratto, Efren Sifuentes and Ryan Baker were on point nearly from wire to wire as head coach Rod Wright and company made a concerted effort to get out and run.
Still hampered by a tweaked hamstring, Sifuentes was no worse for the wear, scoring 17 first-half points and finishing with a game-high 29.
“It was just one of those nights, everything was falling,” he said. “I actually didn’t practice (Thursday) because my hamstring was still aggravating me. So I came out tonight winging it, just seeing how it felt, and I ended up dropping everything.
“In our last game against Linden we didn’t run the ball. We played more set-up offense than our style. We have to get going, we have to run. That’s what gets our flow going, our chemistry, so that’s what we have to keep doing.”
Never was Ripon’s potent run-and-gun style on better display than in the second quarter.
The Indians scored 30 points on 10 field goals, all assisted, and drained six 3-pointers.
Up 16-12 to start the frame, Kyle Mendel found Baker (14 points) on a layup and a triple, before Baker returned the favor thrice, twice setting up Ratto for two triples, and helping on a Mendel layup.
Ratto (19 points) finished the frame with 11, and Mendel racked up five of his seven assists.
Sifuentes (five 3-pointers) drained back-to-back treys with a minute left and capped the frame with a layup that gave the Indians a 46-24 lead heading into the break.
“I thought we got on a nice run when (Summerville) got tired in the second quarter,” Wright said. “We’ve been working really hard on conditioning and making sure our guys play good fundamental position defense.”
Ripon played full-court defense the entire night and the result was a number of long range attempts from the Bears.
Summerville attempted all of its 11 second-quarter shots from behind the arc.
“Efren came out with a really solid game,” Wright said. “Ratto, again, shooting consistently. Everyone keys on Ratto so it opens up Efren, and he was feeling really good tonight. Eventually people are going to have to choose between the two, so it will be a ‘Pick your poison’ kind of a deal.”
Baker punctuated the fourth by dishing off to Michael Merchant for the former quarterback’s first field goal of the season.
Baker (8 assists) also hooked up Kyle Eisenga for two and sent home an acrobatic finger roll through traffic with moments left to provide the proverbial cherry.
“I like Baker when he’s distributing the ball,” Wright said. “Then he controls the whole floor. He’s a point guard that can take his path when he wants to score, and he can control getting others open when they come to him.”
Dane Wells finished with 11 points.
Ripon hit 10 3-pointers and shot 9 of 11 from the free throw line.
The Indians (7-8 overall) host Calaveras Tuesday.
David Vander Schaaf (9 points) and Steve Vander Molen drew the defensive assignment on Will Finn (21.4 ppg), and held the pure scorer to just eight, all in the fourth.
Finn scored 36 on Escalon, 33 on Riverbank and 19 on Modesto Christian earlier this season.
Daniel Vande Pol added eight points.
Tim Minton led the Bullfrogs with 18.
