Sierra High’s boys and East Union’s girls hold the highest seeds among area teams, as they are third and fourth, respectively in the Division III ratings.
The section uses a formula in which win-loss records and strength of league and non-league schedules determine ratings and, ultimately, playoff seeds. The top 16 teams in each of the five divisions advance to the playoffs.
The current power ratings, which include all games played through Jan. 31, can be viewed in their entirety on the section’s website (www.cifsjs.org). Future ratings will be revealed Feb. 9 and 16.
While the release of the ratings comes with some anticipation, Ripon High boys head coach Rod Wright said it’s still too early to tell where teams stand.
Last Thursday, Wright’s Indians suffered a 59-56 upset loss to rival Ripon Christian at home. This defeat is significant because Ripon Christian is a Division V team playing in the Division IV Trans Valley League.
The defeat bumped Ripon (2-2, 11-10 overall) down a few spots and is currently holding onto the final playoff berth in the Division IV bracket. Ripon Christian (2-2, 11-9), on the other hand, benefits from the win, as the Knights are ranked eighth in Division V.
“At this early stage, I don’t know how much it’s going to affect us,” Wright said. “It’s going to come down to who wins and losses later.”
Ripon’s girls team (3-2, 9-10) is also on the bubble at 17, while Ripon Christian (2-3, 7-9) is on track to make its second straight postseason run with the 11th seed in Division V.
There aren’t too many surprises coming out of the Valley Oak League, though the one that stands out most is Manteca’s 10th-seeded rating in Division II boys.
The Buffaloes (7-1, 18-3) are in a tie for the top VOL spot with crosstown foe Sierra (7-1, 15-5), but Manteca is placed in a higher division (the rest of the VOL is Division III) this year because of its growing student-body population.
The Division II field just so happens to be the toughest from top to bottom this year. Eight of the nine teams rated ahead of Manteca are among the top 25 teams in the section regardless of division according to the MaxPreps.com rankings.
Weston Ranch remains in the hunt for boys and girls; the boys team (6-2, 11-9) is rated 12th in Division III, while the girls (4-4, 14-7) are 10th.
East Union’s girls squad boasts the area’s best overall record at 20-1.
Manteca and Sierra’s girls will need good finishes to the regular season to have a chance. Manteca is 20th in Division II, and Sierra is 22nd in Division III. East Union’s boys are 32nd in Division III.
