Spartans show well at Novice Tourney

Lathrop High’s wrestling team produced outstanding results during the Valley Oak League Novice Tournament at Manteca High Saturday.

Of the 32 Spartans that competed, 26 placed, 14 made the finals and half of them walked away with championships.

“We have a great young team with some good kids on it, and I have some pretty awesome coaches,” Lathrop head coach Dimos Birakos said.

Going 3-0 for Lathrop were Jered Weiler (112), Luis Oregel (125) Sam Rodriguez (135), Matt Arguelo (160) and Carlos Fernandez (160). Chris DeGuzman (145) and Dennis Johnson (189) each went 2-0 for their individual titles.

Lathrop’s runner-ups include Roosevelt Theoudele (125), Elijah Cash (135), Hamza Aldana (135), Carlos Sanchez (140), Angel Wilson (152), Wilmer Alvarez (189) and Lupe Tafoya (215).

Omar Guzman (145) and Arck Ramirez (171) bounced back from early losses to go 3-1 for third place.
