Looneys 3-run HRs highlight Northgates blowout win

Anything worth doing once is worth doing twice. 

Northgate’s Tyler Looney blasted a three-run home run in the first inning Sunday. After getting walked in the second he blasted another three-run shot in the third, racking up six RBI to lead Northgate to a 17-2 four-inning mercy-rule win over Lathrop in quarterfinal action of the District 67 11-12-year-old All-Star Tournament at Lincoln Field. 

Looney’s first home run that scored John Perazzo and Jack Cunial was not the only one of the first inning. Dylan Lee (2 for 3, three RBI, home run, double) put one over the fence later in the inning that scored Ivan Vieira (two runs) and Luke Abrew (2 for 3, RBI, two runs) for a 6-1 Northgate lead.  

Anthony Avelar led off the Northgate second with a line drive over the right-field fence. Justin Severson (2 for 3, RBI, double, two runs) added a ground-rule double to score Looney and Tony Pretoni (2 for 2, two RBI, run) for a 9-1 Northgate lead after two innings. 

Northgate scored seven runs in the third inning highlighted by Looney’s three-run blast that scored Xavier Mendez (RBI) and Sage Bordenave (double, two RBI). Mendez singled in Lee, Pretoni singled in Vieira, Abrew plated Severson with a single and Pretoni and Abrew scored on a double by Bordenave. 

Tyler Toste threw the first three innings for Spreckels Park, allowing five hits while striking out four, including setting the side down in order via strikeout in the second inning. John Perazzo came on to throw a no-hit fourth, striking out one. 

Caleb Van Wetter (2 for 2, run) started the game off for Lathrop with a single. Jasper Tover (2 for 2, RBI, run) followed with one-out single and Van Wetter tried to get to third on Tover’s hit but was cut down on a pinpoint throw from Luke Abrew to Looney. Tover scored later in the inning on a single by Chris Pittman for a 1-0 Lathrop lead. 

Lathrop got its other run in the third inning when Van Wetter led off with a single and scored on a single by Tover. The inning came to an abrupt end when Mark Segura grounded to Looney at short who stepped on second to force Tover and then throw to first to double up Segura.

Lathrop faces Salida this evening at 7 in a consolation game. Northgate and Mountain House face off in the semifinal Thursday at 5 p.m.

Spreckels Park 7

Mountain House put seven runs on the board in the third and fourth innings combined and held on for the quarterfinal win. 

Kainoa Ontai (two doubles, three runs) and Alex Gatty (two runs) were both 2 for 3 for Spreckels Park. Zac Cook had a home run and Dominic Tolentino doubled and scored a run.

Spreckels park faces Manteca this afternoon at 5 in a consolation game.
