Aysia Cortez added another achievement to her already-impressive 2015 run on the wrestling mat.
She helped the San Joaquin Wrestling Association win the freestyle portion of the California USA Women’s State Section Duals this past weekend at Whitney High of Rocklin. SJWA also placed third in folkstyle, with Cortez winning five of her eight matches overall. She was 3-1 in freestyle, getting pins in all of her victories.
The SJWA team featured wrestlers from Los Banos, Turlock, Atwater, Modesto, Stockton and Lodi. Cortez was the only member from the Manteca area. The Sacramento Area, Mt. Diablo, Bay Area and a combined squad from the Santa Clara and Central Mountain associations also competed.
Cortez is enjoying a breakout year. In February, the Venture/Excel Academy junior captured the 126-pound crown in the Sac-Joaquin Section Girls Wrestling Regional Invitational and nearly earned a top-eight finish in the CIF Girls State Wrestling Championships. In March, she took third in the CUSA Folkstyle State Championships
Earlier this month she competed in the USA Wrestling Western Junior Women’s Regional at Las Vegas’ South Point Arena and was the runner-up after pinning Caitlin Cardenas in 4 minutes, 4 seconds in the second-place match.
Her effort in Vegas gave her All-American status and a spot on Team California’s national team that will compete in the Asics/Vaughan Cadet & Junior National Championships July 18-19 in Fargo, N.D.
Cortez and her family are looking to raise funds to take part in the event, which will be preceded by camps she plans on attending in the week leading up. Total cost — which includes entry fees, airfare, room and board and Team California gear — is approximately $1,500.
A poker tournament will be held at the Cortez residence in Lathrop on Sunday, June 14 starting at 4 p.m. Cost is $40 to enter. Call 209.603.7861 for more information. Donations can also be delivered online at www.gofundme.com/toosavage.
